KENT STATE VS. UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

Two colleges I have visited recently are Kent State and The University of Akron. Coincidentally, these two colleges are major rivals.
I visited the University of Akron first. The campus is really nice and there are art sculptures that really catch your eye, but as soon as you walk off campus, the area around you isn’t very welcoming. It’s very hard to find your way around the city and everything seems dirty. The city part off campus was kind of scary. After finding the actual campus, my mom and I could not find the parking lot that we were supposed to park in. It took us about a half an hour to locate it. Once we found the parking lot, it started pouring down rain! So when my mom and I figured out where to go, we met up with the tour group and continued on in the rain. We got to see the dorms which I didn ’t really like. They were very small and gross looking. I spotted a bug or two. Yuck! Your dorm is like your safe haven. That’s where you do all of your studying, sleeping and relaxing. Having it look the way it did made me think twice. The cafeteria looked really nice and the meal plan was affordable so that was a good sign. Once we reached the student center, we had the chance to go to meetings. My mom and I went to a financial aid meeting and learned about the cost. In the student center there is the bookstore, where you can buy supplies of all sorts and obviously, books. The book store was a good size and they had a great variety. While my mom and I were on our way back to the car I noticed an outside lounge area. There were a couple of ordinary picnic tables that previous students had carved into and painted so they looked really cool. It gave the campus a more lived in feeling which was really amazing.
When I went to visit Kent state, I wasn’t thinking that I would like that school because I wanted to go to Akron and they were rivals. Right when the tour started I realized Kent would be my choice. As soon as we stepped into the auditorium I felt at home. The meeting began and it wasn’t boring like Akron’s had been. The meeting went through living costs, meal plan costs and tuition. It also showed a map of the campus and told us what time meetings would be for the major you wanted. Once that meeting was over we had the opportunity to roam around the campus or look at career booths. I looked at a few booths and got information. Then, I headed to the building to learn about their nursing program. I got to see what it would be like to be a student. We got a paper that showed us what classes we would have to take for the four years of schooling. Then we got a tour of that building. We saw the classrooms which looked really cool. They had dummies as patients and they were controlled and monitored by a computer. The dummies talked back to you when you asked them a question. It was so cool and it made me excited to become a nurse! I also learned that they have a mentoring program at certain hospitals and nursing homes that were available for sophomore year.
After that tour, I got on a campus bus and went to the student athletic center. There was a rock climbing wall, basketball courts, swimming, an indoor track, and excerize machines. The indoor track was around the swimming pool, but it was above it. The coolest thing about the athletic center was the protein bar. They could make any protein shake! It was awesome. After we got back to main campus, we had lunch outside while some cheerleaders were performing. Then it was time to go home.
Over all, Kent state was my favorite school. I enjoyed going there to visit. Here are some statistics I found for the costs between UA and KS.

Do you know what's in your food?

Like most people, I never really thought about the food I ate. As long as it tasted good and filled me up, I didn't care what it was. After watching Food Inc. I realized that everyone should care about what they eat, and everyone should have a say in what they eat. Major food industries don't want us to know what we are really eating because we probably wouldn't eat it. For instance, you go to wal-mart to buy some bacon and as you pick up the package, you notice the label has a farm with a cute little pig. So you think, "Hmm, farm fresh!", but the truth is: ITS FACTORY MADE. Just like most of the food you are buying. None of it's fresh. Not even "Fresh Produce". Think about this, we live in Ohio.. It's the middle of winter, and your eating apples, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, grapefruit, etc. Doesn't that seem wierd? All this produce is "fresh" yet it's not in season..Hmm doesn't seem right to me. What happens is, the produce is picked before it's ripe and they use ethylene gas to ripen it. I don't know about you, but I would much rather eat food that's not produced in gas. It seems to me that we don't have choice in what we eat anymore. The industries have made it so hard for us to be able to eat healthier. Why is it that vegetables and fruit cost so much, but you can get a burger for a dollar at fast food restaurants? Don't you think it should be switched around? Healthy food should cost less because it's a necessity for a long healthy life. I guess it's just more convenient to drive-thru a fast food place and grab a quick bite to eat. You would think that someone would have produced an organic drive-thru by now. It could be a major solution to a lot of these problems. Obesity, and unhealthy eating habits could be conquered by a large chain of "organic restaurants", that isn't overly expensive. It's seems as if no one really cares about where our food comes from and what it can do to us. I'm sure most of us know that it's not healthy but we continue to eat it anyway. Shouldn't our health and well being come first? Shouldn't we take a stand to all these companies and their false advertising? It can all start with one person. Next time your hungry, really think about the food your about to eat. It can change your eating habits for life!
